Not being from Ottawa originally challenged me to find photoshoot locations. As a wedding photographer, Google Earth has been my best friend for scoping out the best hidden gems that Canada’s capital has to offer. Ottawa has so much variety for photographers. There’s little pockets that feel like Europe, urban parks that give a NYC vibe, and plenty of picturesque hikes.
Wellington Street
This stretch of Ottawa houses the parliament buildings and some pretty stunning government buildings. The Wellington building has large golden archways and gorgeous architecture for your images. The outside of the Supreme Court of Canada is ideal for adding some levelling to your poses.
Rideau Canal
You had to know this would be on the list. It’s giving Seine river in Paris, minus the Eiffel tower. The canal is crazy long, it stretches 202 km from Kingston to Ottawa. The best part about the canal is the Ottawa Locks. There are grand stairs coming down from Rideau Street, the stunning view of Alexandra Bridge, and concrete arches perfect for framing your subject. A short walk from the Ottawa Locks is Confederation park which is home to a stunning fountain, named after Lieutenant Colonel John By, who built the Rideau Canal way back in 1832.
Byward Market
The small hidden courtyards throughout Ottawa’s Byward Market hide you away from the busy city centre. The stone walls, string lights, and tiny cafes create a beautifully romantic mood for your pictures. More specifically be sure to checkout Clarendon Lane Courtyard where you can find the cozy coffee shop, Planet Coffee.
The National Art Center Rooftop
The National Art Center rooftop is chefs kiss for those moody urban shots. It also has a perfect view of the Chateau Laurier & Rideau Canal. Inside is open to the public if you find yourself shooting on a rainy or chilly day.
National Gallery of Canada
I always suggest the National Gallery of Canada when rain interrupts an outdoor shoot. FYI it is free on Thursdays. Be mindful of art you are not allowed to take pictures of, otherwise go nuts!
The Experimental Farm
During the summer & fall, there is so much to look at when visiting the Experimental Farm. You’ll find tons of gardens and cute stone pathways. It’s also a short walk from Dominion Arboretum and Dow’s Lake. If your couple wants to do an activity for their photoshoot, Dow’s Lake is the perfect spot to rent a canoe or kayak.
There's no shortage of photoshoot locations in Ottawa. Whether you love a scenic view or urban cityscape, Ottawa has it all to inspire your photography. Next time you visit Ottawa, be sure to explore these locations that are perfect for photographers.
